In 2000, the Aqua-Adventures team of coaches began running beach camps at 15th Street in Del Mar. Some of us were surfers; some of us were ocean swimmers, but we all had shared a mutual love for the ocean, similar backgrounds in child development, and the awareness that positive childhood memories can last a lifetime.

Aqua Adventures offers camps and lessons at our beautiful North County beaches, mainly 15^th Street in Del Mar, where we have been honored to hold a permit for nine years. We set up base on the gorgeous grassy area next to Powerhouse Park- conveniently and safely located  next to the restrooms and showers-one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!  Our surf  location is one of the best in San Diego for beginners to learn to surf as well as enjoy other fun activities like sandcastle making, body boarding, swimming and hanging out with new and established friends and siblings.

Our goals are to teach kids beach safety, ocean sports, respect and love for marine ecology, friendship and team skills. Aqua-Adventures’ coaches are trained to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment, where kids can have fun while they learn and experience the ocean. We offer choices of well-rounded activities that will strengthen our campers near and in the ocean.

CAMPS:

Aqua-Adventures offers camps that are great for beginners to experience the ocean, develop or strengthen surf skills in the white and green waters, build on body boarding skills, strengthen swim skills, and socialize with friends. Our coaches make it fun for your child to learn about surfing and the ocean. Our campers are in small groups with an average of one  trained, caring counselor to four campers.

Aqua-Adventures BEACH & SURF CAMP

This co-ed camp, ages 5 to 13 years, involves mainly surfing and body boarding. Each student is encouraged to surf each day for at least one surf session. Campers choose activities based upon personal preference, weather and water conditions. Whether choosing to boogie board more or surf more, either way they become stronger, more capable ocean athletes. Body boarding skills prepare and strengthen kids for progression to surfing through paddling practice, water-flow experience, wave timing, board balance, and rules of ocean etiquette.

Initially, we teach surfing skills with a one-instructor-to-one-student ratio. Once your child has progressed and feels confident, they are allowed to surf with a ratio of three campers to one coach. At this stage, they are becoming more independent as they strengthen their paddling, turning, duck diving, and pop-up skills.

Aqua-Adventures BEACH & SURF CAMP offers the full range of camp activities:

Aqua-Adventures SANDPIPERS

The sandpiper is that small, energetic bird that you can see at the beach running in the shallow water and hopping energetically along the sand. Just like some younger kids who love the beach but are still a little overwhelmed by deeper water, the sandpiper enjoys being wet, but isn’t likely to head out into the waves.

If your little sandpipers (aged five to eight years old) aren’t quite ready for a whole day of  learning and practicing water sports, but still love being near the water and in the shallows, building sand structures, and perfecting their boogie board skills, then this camp is for them!

Aqua-Adventures SANDPIPERS is the perfect choice for beach newbies who want to become more acclimated to the beach and water. They will learn, in an engaging and fun way, all about the ocean in order to play and stay safe: tides, waves, currents, marine creatures and marine life, the importance of sun protection and beach/water good manners. Through non-competitive games and activities they will strengthen their basic athletic and shallow water skills, experience team-building, and make new friends, all with our philosophy of Empowered Learning [Link to Our Philosophy in About Us] in mind.

Aqua-Adventures SANDPIPERS CAMP offers the following camp activities:

SAFETY:

We at Aqua-Adventures take safety very seriously. One component of our camps and lessons is to stress how to avoid accidents in and out of the water. Knowing about riptides, sea life, and awareness of your surroundings are ways to avoid mishaps. Our instructors are all CPR certified and are experienced swimmers and surfers. Lifeguards are always on the beach for help in an emergency.

1. Each counselor has a team of four campers that becomes their own “family.” (4:1 ratio)

2. Counselors are with campers at all times, even escorting them to the restrooms.

3. Surfing is 1:1 ratio for all beginning surfers.

4. All surfing is taught on safe, soft foam boards.

5. Campers are in front of the lifeguard tower while in the water.

6. Campers are in shallow water at all times, except for advanced surfers who head out into the green water accompanied by a surf instructor.

7. Our staff is CPR/First Aid Certified.

8. An adult supervisor is on location at all times.

9. Counselors help kids apply sunscreen at snack and lunchtime.

Professional photographer and surfer, Toby Ogden, ( www.tobyogdenphotography.com) has teamed up with Aqua-Adventures to capture all the fun and action that goes on at surf camp. Toby gets shots of some great moments from camp including action shots (surfing & body boarding), still shots (solo and friends), and shot of the whole group.

Packages range between $40 and $80.

ECO-ADVENTURES Field Trips

Exploration. Stewardship. Fun.

Live-it-Up with our Eco-Adventures Team. Seek and hide treasures as you experience the amazing outdoor environment that surrounds us. Cut loose with us on geocache adventures, using GPS technology, as we hike & trek through interesting terrain to discover buried treasures. Along the excursion, we will be learning about local plant and wildlife, and explore ways to protect and restore the wild. Positive interaction with the environment can create wonder and awe, inspiring the next generation to be good stewards and help them to see how they can have a positive impact in their world today. “It’s not just the destination, it’s the joy of the journey.”

Exploratory Art & Fun

Art is Everywhere: Exploring Nature through Art & Photography

This camp is designed to connect youth with the natural world that surrounds them right here in their home town. Campers will be experiencing nature through hands-on activities that include scavenger hunts, games, and amazing art projects. This camp will be held mainly outdoors, Students will learn how to create sculptures from natural materials, to understanding the techniques of digital photography, with a mix of games and challenges. This camp will be sure to provide campers with a stimulating and enriching outdoor camp experience- one they will never forget.

When: Week of April 2 and April 9th

BEADING & JEWELRY MAKING WORKSHOPS For all ages

Make gifts that look great! Design and create a new, unique piece of jewelry such as a bracelet, key chain, necklace, or earrings. Using beautiful crystal, stones, glass, metal and wood beads, and variety of wire and the tools used in jewelry making, learn fundamentals of design, basic beading and wiring techniques. Fine tune your creativity, and small motors skills. Feel proud of your pieces which will look store-bought. Your pieces make unique gifts or can be kept for their own collection! All supplies are included.

(Ages 4 and 5 year olds must be accompanied by an adult)

Surf Lessons & Clinics

Newby Surfers and advanced surfers have cherished their surf lesson experience with Aqua-Adventures at 15th Street Del Mar, Encinitas, and Cardiff Beaches.  Whether you are local or from out-of-town, aged five or fifty, are a first time or experienced surfer, our individual and family surf lessons offer an extraordinary way to experience the unique coastal Southern California lifestyle.

Whether your goal is to begin your surf career on solid footing, or just to say you “tried it,” Aqua-Adventures’ instructors can guarantee an exhilarating, safe, and successful surf experience. First-time surfing is much safer and easier with the support of a professional instructor. At Aqua-Adventures, we pride ourselves in getting you up on the surfboard quickly so you too can experience the epic, joy of surfing.

Since 2002, Aqua-Adventures Swim Academy has been offering group and private swim lessons to children in the North County San Diego area. We can teach in your pool, from La Jolla to Carlsbad or east as far as Poway, or ours in La Costa, Cardiff, Solana Beach, and Carmel Valley. The Swim Academy is a wonderful companion to our Aqua-Adventures Beach Camps  program, in that kids will further develop their water skills, which will in turn keep them safe in the ocean. We understand that the experience of swimming can be traumatic for new swimmers and our goal is to minimize the stress and maximize the fun. Our coaches are WSI certified and trained and have over 15 years’ experience teaching swim skills.
Our staff sees extraordinary progress in the students as a result of our award-winning swim lessons. In an atmosphere of patience and love, each child can build self-esteem through repeated, incremental success. We Are Coaches, Inc. always teaches children with our philosophy, Empowered Learning,  in mind.

Our goals for swimmers include:

Eye Imagine More

Art is capturing what you see and interpreting it on to paper. Students will learn to translate these visuals into wonderful drawings as they learn pencil technics and shading skills. Simple drawings will be done, paying attention to spacing, shapes, and lighting, making drawings come alive. Drawing a variety of subject matter will demonstrate the common thread to capturing the likeness of what they see, using still-life, nature, landscapes, flowers, people, and animals. If you can use a pencil, you can draw!

1. Still life

Understanding geometric shapes and shading go hand in hand. Recognizing surface change, darks and light, and cores will bring realism into each drawing regardless of the subject.

2. Nature

Flowers, leaves and rock all have different characteristics. Shading can define shape and texture differences and their beauty.

3.  Landscapes Trees and rolling hillsides make wonderful drawing. To capture it‛s essence, pencils are used to show both solid and wispy surfaces.

4. Animals Learning to draw our furry friends will be fun, with examples using tigers, monkeys, and dogs.

5. People Drawing people allows a sketch to show realism. The hands, eyes, and face can present dramatic shadows as well as emotional expression

6. Transportation Pencil sketches can also capture the shine of objects. Car sketches are fun to create as well as learning to render them.

7.  Top Choice This is an opportunity to explore their  favorite subject matter. Choosing between nature, landscape, animal, people, and transportation, student may create more.

Coach Peg Windisch

Peg Windisch is a teacher, author, public speaker, and Family Relationship & Parenting Mentor. With a Bachelors of Science degree from Minnesota and a Parent Education Certification from California, her mission is to teach skills to families and offer loving care that fosters learning and connecting in a fun, enriching environment. Peg, INCAF PE Certified, is the founder of the Raising Respectful Children Program, a program for parents and children. In the past sixteen years she has personally taught over 1500 parents & teachers. For eight years, she facilitated the Redirecting Children’s Behavior program and was one of the most active parent educators is San Diego. Her vision is that all family members learn skills, knowledge, and consciousness regarding family cooperation, respect, and team-building.

In 1996 Peg founded We Are Coaches, Inc., non-profit group. As the Executive Director, Windisch, the Board of Directors, and teacher alliance bring various kids and adult programs to communities of North County of San Diego. Her professiona,l hands-on experience with children includes 12 years of teaching, managing and directing School’s Out-Meaning Fun’s In Programs. She has taught after-school programs, summer camps, preschool programs, Mommy & Me, & swim lessons. Peg’s personal experience includes raising two daughters who are now 24 years and 15 years old, as a single mother. In 2005, Peg began authoring an innovative parenting resource in partnership with KidCite, Inc. This resource covers “Practical Consequences for Kids’ Behavior” will be come to market in 2011.
